The friendly character of the Tió is represented as a wooden log with a smiling face drawn on it. Like the Caganer, it wears the typical barretina (the traditional Catalan hat) and is usually partially covered with a checkered blanket. Legend has it that if you welcome a Tió into your home in December, the children in your household must feed and give it water each day. Then, on the night of December 24th, if you have cared for it properly, it will "poop" out presents for the whole family under its blanket when you hit it with a stick to the rhythm of a famous traditional song. The Tió symbolizes magic and wonder, as it is the character who, typically in Catalonia, brings the most desired gifts on Christmas Eve.
