Davy Jones is known to many for his role in the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, where he is depicted with features of marine creatures. He is the captain of the ship The Flying Dutchman, with a crew composed of the souls of dead sailors. In reality, the legend of Davy Jones is very old, with the first reference dating back to 1726. In sailors’ tales, he is known for Davy Jones' Locker, the bottom of the sea where lost sailors end up. His name associated with the locker carries a negative connotation, a subtle way of referring to death at sea.
