Caganer El Oso y el Madroño
The statue of the “El Oso y El Madroño” dominates the east side of the Puerta del Sol and has currently become the city symbol. Its sculptor is Antonio Navarro Santafé and it was inaugurated in 1967. Made of bronze and stone, the animal pays tribute to a wild bear caught by King Alfonso XI in a nearby mountain. Regarding the tree, the Strawberry Tree is intended to symbolise a dispute between the Villa and the clergy Members of Madrid about the ownership of land covered with strawberry trees. As a curiosity, the bear in the statue is willing to eat the leaves because back then it was a remedy against the plagues.
