Yet to have enough room for the new, the old sometimes has to go. These days is practically impossible to find washerwomen at the riverside or in the other communal laundry places: the public wash-houses. Some were based on a simple village fountain spilling over into a basin, while others were large purpose-built facilities. Running water was not common, and this place did not take long to become a meeting point and a No Man’s Land where women would endlessly gossip and chat with other women who lived in the area. No sign of social networks, these women knew the art of the tittle-tattle.
